How to Use the Template in UNIX

Getting the Newest Version of LaTeX on Our UNIX

  1. Put:
  2. /usr/local/tex/bin at the front of your PATH
    /usr/local/tex/man at the front of your MANPATH
    /usr/local/tex/lib at the front of your LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    /usr/local/tex/info at the front of your INFOPATH

  3. Set environment variable TEXMFMAIN to /usr/local/tex/texmf.


Extract the files from Thesis.zip using the command

unzip Thesis.zip

The files will automatically extract to a folder/directory called Thesis. The .tex and .bib files will be extracted to this folder. Subfolders will contain figures, etc. (The main tex file is thesis.tex; it inputs/includes other files as required.)


Note: The contents of the zip file have been installed at 



Edit the latex file in your editor of choice. Some choices include VI, emacs, or NEdit. Latex is the underlying latex engine which compiles the file. You need to edit your file outside of Latex.


Compile the Thesis.tex file using the command:

latex Thesis.tex

Depending on the Latex installation, you may get compile problems, such as missing sty files. These files have been included in the zip file. You may also get an error to do with cases (but not a missing file). For now, just hit ‘s’ to skip that problem. See the update notes on the Thesis Template page.

To include the bibliography use:

bibtex Thesis

Now you need to latex two more times to make sure that the cross-referencing is correct:

latex Thesis.tex
latex Thesis.tex

This creates a file called Thesis.dvi which is the typeset document that you want to view.


Viewing the Result

Use the Xdvi viewer to view the final product:

xdvi Thesis.dvi


Printing the Result

To direct the .dvi file to the printer named ps1, use the command:

dvips -Pps1 Thesis.dvi


Converting the Result to PS or PDF

To convert the .dvi file to PostScript, use the command:

dvips -o Thesis.ps Thesis.dvi

Once you have the PS file, you can convert it to PDF with the command:

ps2pdf Thesis.ps Thesis.pdf
